Avatar contact lenses are going to be the next big thing. My previous post goes into details on the best contacts I had found that can recreate the awesome and natural look of the Na’vi, the beings that inhabit the planet of Pandora.
As I predicted they are currently coming out with contact lenses explicitly for the Avatar. I’ve found some avatar contact lenses from Body Jewelry Shop, but I’m not sure how well they will actually look on. I’m looking for some good images on people that have purchased them and showing them off, but haven’t run across any just yet.
The avatar contact lenses available from Body Jewelry Shop look good enough, but I’m not sure of the size and quality once worn. If you run across any images, or have purchased some yourself, then send me some images and I’ll share them with everyone.
It’s really a good indication of how popular these contacts are going to be even now, and especially during the Halloween and costume party season. There have been a lot of reports in the news of people being so into the Avatar movie, and the Na’vi world that was created that they are getting detached from reality of this world we live in, because in comparison it falls very flat.
I’ve found many images of people who have recreated the Na’vi look, but not with actual contact lenses, but instead by editing their pictures with graphic programs, such as Adobe Photoshop. Some of the best ones I’ve seen so far:
If you plan on going as Na’vi now, or ever, you will probably know already that simply painting your face, adding the lines, sparkles and everything else will get you close, but unless you recreate the look of their fabulous yellow eyes, it won’t look as good as it should.
If you’ve ever purchased colored contact lenses before then you will have a head start on some of the things you need to know, but if you haven’t you might be in for a treat. Some of the basics you need to know are:
Buy them early. Don’t wait until a week or two before Halloween to order your avatar contact lenses. Many people do this, and even if they aren’t already out of stock, you might not get them shipped to you until it’s too late.
Get a prescription. Even if you aren’t getting any sort of vision correction you will still need a valid prescription from your doctor or eye care specialist to order them online. Get that ready before you try to order or it can hold it up until you do.
Take care of your contacts. If you take care of your colored contacts, you might be able to use them for a few Halloween’s instead of just one. Since it’s unlikely anything as big as the Na’vi will be out anytime soon, you can probably steal the show for quite a while!
So one thing is for sure, the Na’vi costumes are going to be in full effect for this Halloween. Avatar is already the second highest grossing film of all-time, and is on track to be the biggest ever. The Na’vi are the inhabitants of the world Pandora and they are very tall, and have bright yellow eyes.
I’ve already run across some images of people who are dressing up as Na’vi, and in order to get that extra step, the perfect yellow contacts will seal the deal and probably win many costume contests.
The question remains, which yellow contacts will work best for a Na’vi look? I’ve looked around and so far the best I’ve found would be the Cyvus Vail yellow contacts from Coastal Contacts. The big thing about the Na’vi look is not that it’s a yellow colored eye, it’s also how big it is.
One concern is that they do run you about $125 each contact, so you should be prepared to spend some money if you want that perfect Na’vi look. The reason they are more expensive is simply because they don’t cover just your pupil like a normal contact, but instead make the appearance of your pupil, and really you’re entire eye, in a larger more dominant eye, just like the Na’vi.
The Na’vi’s are large and their eyes are just as prominent. You need a yellow contact lenses that is larger than your actual eye and gives off that gigantic look that works so well on the Na’vi of Pandora.
You can see the Na’vi eyes here, and then compare them to the yellow contacts I recommend and you can tell it’s a pretty good match. It’s very possible, and I will update this page if it happens, that there will be some specially designed contacts for the Na’vi look.
Contact manufacturer’s are pretty good at keeping up with trends in the media and the looks that people go for so I wouldn’t be surprised if sometime before this upcoming Halloween at least one will make a specific contact just for the needs of the Avatar fans.
If, and assuming they will, for now this is the best solution for avatar contact lenses I’ve found online to meet the Na’vi look and I think it works pretty well. Designing the rest of the Na’vi costume will be up to you, but I’m sure there will be a big market for that look as well. One thing that has almost always held true when it comes to designing your own Halloween costume after your favorite character, is that when you do it yourself, and it comes from the heart, it will be a better costume.
Store bought costumes, for the Na’vi for example, will probably not be nearly as realistic and effective opposed to you making your own. Paint your body blue, add the special look and feel and then top it off with some Na’vi contact lenses and you will have the best costume around.
There are many styles, shapes and designs for yellow contacts so before you actually purchase them you should do enough research to know that you are getting the exact yellow contacts you want.
Here are a few things you should check and do a run-down on before you make your purchase:
Do I have a prescription for my yellow contact lenses?
You won’t, or shouldn’t be able to purchase any colored contacts, regardless of color, without a valid prescription.
So before you go online and shop for the yellow contacts you want, consult with your local Doctor or Eye Care Specialist to make sure you are able to wear them and get the proper prescription.
This will be needed in order to order and wear them.
What style of yellow contacts do I want?
There are many styles and patterns to choose from. From Dark Yellow, to Wolves, Zombies, Vampires and more.
There are some that turn your entire eye dark yellow, while others will only effect your pupil.
Some of the best places to purchase yellow contacts that I’ve found are: http://www.visiondirect.com, http://www.colorvuelens.com, http://www.bodyjewelleryshop.com and https://www.coastalcontacts.com.
You can find all sorts of funky shapes and patterns of light yellow, yellow and dark yellow at those sites.
How long will it take to get my yellow contacts?
If you are ordering before Halloween you should typically expect a longer time to get them as they will no doubt be very busy.
It typically can take anywhere from 1-3 weeks to get your yellow contacts so you should try to plan ahead and order them with plenty of time to get them for your party.
There are essentially three types of colored contact lenses. Depending on what you want yellow contacts for, you should find the exact type you want, and then within that type, the different manufacturer’s styles will differ.
The first kind will be tint, solely for visibility. They are usually light green or blue tints, and they just help you find your contacts when you drop them. These aren’t really considered colored contacts, but more as regular contacts that have tint because once you put them on, you will not see the tint anywhere.
You won’t find yellow contacts with this style because yellow is already easy enough to see. These visibility type contacts are just for clear contacts typically.
The second kind of colored contact will be enhancements. They are not designed to totally change the color of your eyes but more just to add a slight tint. They do affect your eye color, but only slightly. These are more often found year-round and not just for costume or Halloween purposes.
They can be used by people with light eyes or dark eyes, although the ones with lighter eyes will always work better.
Colored tints are the third kind, and the more common for yellow colored contacts for your eyes. These will completely change the color of your eyes, usually regardless of what your natural color is. If you have dark eyes these work great because they cover the regular color of your eye completely.
These will be used more often for costume or Halloween partises. You can find them in a lot of different styles and designs ranging from vampires, wolves and zombies. There are also silly designs like flowers or smiley faces.
If you are planning on going as a certain person or character to a costume or Halloween party that has yellow eyes, then here are a few characters through the ages who are known for having yellow eyes. This is list is far from complete so if you know of anybody I should add, please let me know!
Na’vi from Avatar
The Na’vi are the peaceful residents of the planet Pandora in the new film Avatar by James Cameron. They are very tall, blue creatures with big yellow eyes, and other fantastic features. No doubt this upcoming Halloween will be full of people dressed as the infamous Na’vi so yellow contacts will probably have a big year.
You can find out more about Na’vi contacts and Avatar contacts by reading my other more recent posts where I go into further detail. They are looking to be very big costume ideas for this Halloween so you should get ready early and order them asap.

Creatures from Where The Wild Things Are

The famous creatures from the mystical world of Where The Wild Things Are, which was a very popular children’s book, is now being turned into a full-length feature film due to release in late 2009. The creatures will no doubt become more popular and there will be many children who want to copy their look. If you are looking for costumes for young children, I wouldn’t recommend that you let them wear yellow contacts to complete the look. Instead, find a costume that has the full mask and eyes already included. Children wearing colored contacts for costume and theatrical purposes is not recommended.
Mystique from X-Men

Mystique, the female character and villain from the popular X-Men comics and movies has dark yellow pupils with a lighter yellow sclera. Her evil yellow eyes really assist in accenting her dark blue skin. She is known to be able to morph into any shape and color she chooses, so she only has her yellow eyes when she is in her truest form. Mystique is a fairly popular costume, but not as popular as it was when the X-Men movies were first coming out. It’s a difficult costume to pull off because it is full body, and usually requires the body to simply be painted. The yellow contacts that go along with it should be no problem.
Nightcrawler from X-Men

Nightcrawler is another character from X-Men, who also has yellow eyes. The difference here is that he is actually a good guy, even though not always looked upon as such. As his true colors come through everyone realizes he is simply misunderstood and has good intentions. Another difference between him and Mystique is that his eyes are not solid yellow, but instead just the iris is actually yellow. It’s much more intense when on the iris is yellow because it contracts so well on the bright white.
Michael Jackson from Thriller

His girlfriend just had the worst dream ever. It seemed so real. She was leaving a movie theater and walking down the dark street when all of the sudden zombies came out from everywhere and started to attack. She turned to her boyfriend for help only to realize he was one of them! They started dancing and chasing her, when they finally caught up to her she woke up only to find her boyfriend was just trying to wake her up. They started walking out the door when he turned around and showed his true self with bright, evil, yellow eyes!
Azazel from Supernatural

Thanks to Janice for her comment reminding me of this additional yellow-eyed character. I actually really enjoy Supernatural and have seen every episode so I’m not sure how I even forgot about this in the first place!
Azazel is a reoccuring demon on the show Supernatural. He was very prevalent in the first two seasons and has a long history with the main characters of the show. He is actually referred to as the “Yellow Eyed Demon” on several occasions. More information about him in detail is revealed in the third season and some big things happen, which I won’t spoil!
